With a back catalogue including Catan, Rise of Nations, and the Asian Dynasties expansion for Age of Empires III, Big Huge Games has a strong strategy lineage, but now the developer is striking new ground with an action-RPG, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Big Huge Games has scored a host of similarly huge names for the project, including the lead designer of The Elder Scrolls’ titles Morrowind and Oblivion, Ken Rolston; noted fantasy author R.A. Salvatore, and the creative force behind Spawn, Todd McFarlane.
In this behind the scenes video, the game’s designers discuss two of the game’s more interesting systems, Destiny and Fate. The Destiny system replaces the traditional RPG class structure, which locks players into a particular character type before they really know the game. In Reckoning, the designers have instead rewarded freeform character building with a set of additional buffs that complement your playstyle. Fate adds a weight to players’ major actions, giving permanent perks to mark key decisions that have shifted the course of the world.
Kingdoms of Amalur is set for our shores in February next year, releasing across PC, PS3 and 360.

The Destiny system certainly sounds like the work of Ken Rolston, given how the Elder Scrolls series has gone in that direction also.
