Big Gabe shared some info at DICE about some Steam sales. When Left 4 Dead was on sale over a weekend, its sales increased by 3000%. A third party game saw a sales increase of 36,000% during a weekend sale. And this:
During the Holiday sales:
-
[
- ]10% sale = 35% increase in sales (real dollars, not units shipped) [
- ]25% sale = 245% increase in sales [
- ]50% sale = 320% increase in sales [*]75% sale = 1470% increase in sales
Maybe there's some psychological marketing trickery whereby people just see '75% off' rather than the dollar figure and buy because it's a nice deal. Maybe that holiday sale was a special occasion, advertised widely, and people had time off and money to spend. But surely those figures are something to think about. A price tag of $90-110 must be a big barrier to buying new games for a lot of people. Mustn't it?
