Harmful chemicals found in Nintendo Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360

Watch out, Radioactive Man!
Greenpeace have found that the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 all contain high levels of toxic chemicals but say this won't affect any of their users...for now.
"Greenpeace acknowledged the level of toxic material does not violate European regulations, although some are banned from use in toys meant for small children. Though not harmful in the amounts used, some chemicals are released into household dust, inhaled and pile up in the body over time.

"Nobody will drop dead tomorrow," Greenpeace campaigner Zeina AlHajj said today. "But these products are used by kids ... They are persistent and they are accumulating through our life." "

Apparently the machines are most dangerous when they are thrown away. Their are plans for major electronics companies to reduce hazardous components in their consoles.

Thompson accused of Rule Violations

Jack Thompson gets pwned

Deep down, Jack really wishes he was playing this...
US lawyer Jack Thompson, known for his criticism of violence in video games, has been found guilty of several Florida Bar rule violations.

Judge Dava Tunis, the referee assigned to this case, found he had violated 27 rules, including making false statements to tribunals, improperly practising law outside Florida, and also humiliating litigants and other lawyers.

Thompson filed a motion Tuesday with the Florida Supreme Court to strike Tunis' recommendations as vague for lack of detail.

"I'm going into this blind," said Thompson, a crusader against pornography and violent video games. "She should have issued her report at least to her findings and then have a sanction hearing."

This retaliation comes after the Judge apparently failed to go into detail on how she came to her conclusions, or indeed without entering specifics regarding the alleged violations themselves.

A sanctions hearing on the matter is scheduled to take place on June the 4th.

Internet censorship in Australia to become a reality

Spying is not cool
The Federal government is still pushing to censor Australian Internet in a bid to filter out inappropriate material to save kiddies from accessing pr0n. According to No Clean Feed, this will be a technical disaster.

* A filter would require ISPs to examine all Internet traffic, causing enormous expense and technical headaches.

* A filter will slow Internet access down by up to 78% according to a Government report.

* No software yet exists that can accomplish what the Minister is trying to do.

* Millions of web sites, with the list changing on a daily basis, would need to be monitored by Australian bureaucrats - an impossible task.

* Illegal material is already hidden and so would be difficult to find to even add to the blacklist in the first place.

* Any determined user - including children - could bypass the filter quickly using an anonymizer service.

* The clean feed would be less customisable and effective than a PC-based filter.

If you want to know more, log onto No Clean Feed’s website. The censorship plan has the potential to stifle free speech…as well as slow down our already speed lacking Interwebs.

Play Games While You Pee

Belgian urinals to incorporate video game

Weeeeeeeeeeee!
Two beer drinking, Belgian game developers have created the latest installment in urinal games – that’s right, you can kill things while you pee.
"The 'Place to Pee' booth is designed for two users at a time and offers two games - blowing up aliens in outer space or skiing down a virtual slope. Gamers hit their target by aiming at sensors positioned on either side of the urinal.

A specially designed paper cone allows women to play too, the inventors say."

A racing game of the same model was launched in Belgium last year but was banned by police who made it an indecency offence to play.

Who says video games can't be helpful?!

Don't be fooled...this is a photo of a real store...
Three college graduates in the USA, together with a team of coders, game designers, and others, have created a game that simulates the experience of going shopping.

The CapAbility Games Research Project, operating out of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y, developed the game 'Capable Shopper' to be a tool to help people with disabilities develop essential life skills and independence.

“By creating this simulated learning environment, our students have given individuals with disabilities an engaging way to learn skills directly related to independence in their daily lives. Beyond that, they’ve gotten them excited about engaging with the real world,” said Kathleen Ruiz, associate professor of electronic arts at Rensselaer, and faculty leader of the CapAbility Research Project.

“Games like ‘Capable Shopper’ illustrate the potential for new gaming genres such as serious games that combine the strengths of interactivity with multimedia to provide engaging simulations in communication, education, and artistic expression, among others.”

- ScienceDaily

The game is played by using either a specially designed joystick or head mouse. Players select a meal they would like to make, and move through the shopping centre in order to collect the requisite ingredients.

The game is now accesible round the clock at the Centre for Disability Services in Albany.
