Playing games won’t turn children into criminals

Take that!
Children that don’t play video games are more likely to get into trouble than those that do, according to Harvard psychologists.

"If you look at the violent crime in the US over the past 20 years among teenagers it's gone down, and gone down significantly, and if you look at videogame play, it's gone up," said Dr Lawrence Kutner and Dr Cheryl Olsen of Harvard Medical School in a recent interview.

Dr Kutner and Dr Olson conducted a two-year study of 1250 children and 500 parents, funded by the US Department of Justice, to uncover links between games and children's behaviour.

The pair found that while there was no direct link between games and violence, there was a correlation between adult-rated games and aggressive behaviour.

The Harvard duo also said that playing games is a measure of social competence, especially for boys. It is still unknown whether or not adult-rated games cause aggressive behaviour, or if aggressive children are drawn to playing them.

Turn your PC into a mini-planetarium

Warning: Nebula may appear closer than it actually is
Microsoft launched a program yesterday that allows you to view stars, planets and other cool celestial objects up close and personal, right from your PC.

It [the WorldWide telescope] has drawn lavish praise from some of the world's leading space scientists and educators, including Dr Roy Gould of the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics.

"Galileo's telescope started to give us views of the universe that no one else had seen before and we started asking what was out there and why. And I think the WorldWide Telescope is going to do the same thing for the rest of us," he said in a telephone interview.

"In terms of pushing the envelope, this really pushes the envelope."

- SMH

The program basically mirrors other online mapping tools, allowing users to interact with high-resolution images and data from leading astronomical research organizations.

Transformers Movie Review!

Scratches that pesky robot itch

The geekery! It burns!
I can't list all five Decepticons in Devastator, but I do get nervous going into any Transformers movie that doesn't have wailing 80s guitars and the lyrics, “You got the heart, you got the motion.”

Just for the record, I’m letting this slide on all crimes against Transformer lore. If you are going to get precious about little things like who turns into what, then you don’t have much chance with this one.

This movie is designed to be a holiday blockbuster. It's that simple. There's action, there are expensive special effects and there are cute lead characters. Things explode. Stuff movies quickly into other stuff ... then explodes.

Offline today, online tomorrow (we hope)

You'd probably have more luck with correct spelling
In case you've been scratching your head at our fourms' insistence to remain hidden from the interwebs, rest easy, for all will be back up and running in less than 24 hours time.

The PCPP forums are offline while our tireless crew of mods and admins give them a thorough spring-clean, tighten those bolts, and rewire those circuits. We do apologise for the downtime, but we're confident you'll agree it was worth it when you see them return in their new form.

That's right. Exciting changes are ahead. So check back tomorrow (if all goes to plan) and be one of the first to see them!

WIN! Spiderman 3 Tickets!

Full body gumboots. Classy.
Everyone loves Spiderman. Even Spiderman. Or does he? Find out in the latest instalment! There's more Spidey than ever before, literally, plus Ned of Ned and Stacey dusts himself off for a new role. Ahaha.

Yes well, since everyone wants to see Spiderman 3, we thought we'd cough up a few double passes. The film opens on May 3, so you have until then to get your entries in.

What's the task? What bizarre, weird-arse thing are we going to make you do to get your hands on some tickets? Oh it's perfectly simple - because the film is all about a super Spidey suit that taps into Spidey's deeper, darker side, we need to see yours too.

Your super-suit we mean. That article of clothing which turns meek little you into a raging psychopath vigilante. Or at the very least lets you cut loose at parties.

Send a photo! No nudity, reflectoporn or posing with weapons please. We get enough of that in the Post Your Photo 2007 thread on our forums.

Winners will get their face on the site, and their bums in two seats at a Spiderman 3 session. That should tingle all eleventy four of your Spidey senses.
