Timothy C. Best sometimes seems away with the fairies, but the truth of the matter is far more math-e-magical. With all the 3D-accelerated musings grinding around in his head, pixies are plum out of luck. He’s where we shake him and see what falls out.

Hi, I'm an Annoying Mac Ad

I'm watching a trailer for Die Hard 4.0 and I'm seeing a certain comic side-kick and thinking about some of his other work.

Stupid ads. Stupid Warren Cheswick (Justin Long) being all hip and unassuming and unthreating, and John Hodgman being brilliant as the scene-stealing dry as dust PC, who you can't help but like even as you wish him on your worst enemy.

I've noticed something: I'm a gameplay snob. It's come from watched a bunch of people play games recently. My girlfriend for one. She likes to methodically go around collecting things, getting maximum health for every encounter and using the weapons that let her hide as much as possible. Me, I think that games should fly close to the wind. Save those potions, go into the battle a little hurt if it keeps your momentum up, get up and in the face of the guy you're fighting, score style points – live it up with a swashbuckling abandon. These things are meant to be fun and adventurous, for the love of Job.

I refute said claims and have an entire entertainment system to help me do it.

When I was at the 2K offices getting a sneak peek at Shivering Isles a few weeks ago I came to a stunning realisation: roleplaying games have evolved. They are not the same beasts that used to cuddle up besides the old-school point-and-click adventures.

I only realised this liberating thought after I came to the conclusion I didn't have the time, in my limited play session, to do things “properly”. Of course, by properly I mean carting everything within visual range back to base camp to offload on some very long-suffering merchant.

If you've taken a spin around the web you might have seen the video footage of Peter Molyneux's presentations on Fable 2. The game looks great, but the real kicker comes with a waggly tail. A dog.
