Well you won't find any in Hero...

"Can't a monster eat dinner in peace?"
Forget the bags of loot that drop on the ground after you've sliced-and-diced the latest monster: Firefly Studios, the makers of Stronghold Legends, want to take dungeon crawling to a whole other level with Hero.

Firefly's vision of a dungeon is that of an impoverished city that is full of the poor and downtrodden: a dungeon full of a shadowy evil which feeds on the despair of its inhabitants.

This a dungeon at war - not a place with bags of gold just lying around! This action RPG uses Firefly's dazzling new HD engine, allowing the player to storm heroically through underground halls while taking in the detail and complexity of a world previously unseen. Master melee, ranged and magic skills and 'Close combat' a totally new, brutal mode of fighting as you battle your way through vast crowds of monsters. Fight alone or have a friend drop in to survive - and maybe even save - the darkest society imaginable!

- Official site

While the short teaser draws our intrigue, we'll be waiting until 2009 to get a glimpse of Hero. Keep an eye on the Hero website for all the latest media on the game... just don't be expecting any bags of gold!

The gang's all here

Wow, don't give too much away.
A huge bomb was dropped at the recent Penny Arcade Expo (PAX). It was announced that Gabe, Tycho, and many of our other favourites from the Penny Arcade universe will be be jumping into the world of gaming with a series of episodic games. Developed by Hothead Games, the first installment - Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, is currently in development for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with next-gen console versions following soon after.

Right now there is little known about the game's mechanics apart from the few subtle hints that Gabe dropped on the Penny Arcade website.

Right now all I can tell you is that we’re calling the game a “comic adventure”. I’m not sure that you could drop it into one genre but think RPG/adventure game. We’re sticking with what we’re good at so you can expect the game to have a lot of PA style humor and feature many of your favorite characters. I can’t go into too much detail about the setting or the characters but I’ll leave you with three words: Tycho, Gabe, Lovecraft.

Currently no release date has been set. Keep an eye tuned to the Penny Arcade and Hothead Games websites for more details.

Funcom and SCi/Eidos push back release date

Crom laughs at your four winds
Funcom has announced that they will be co-publishing Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures with SCi/Eidos. The MMORPG, based on the pulp fantasy series created by Robert E. Howard, is now expected to be launched between March and May of 2007 and is currently in the Beta phase of development. Plans are also in place to port the game to next-gen consoles.

"We have strong faith in the sales potential for 'Age of Conan', and by combining the knowledge and reach of both SCi/Eidos and Funcom we believe the game will become a great success," said Ian Livingstone, Product Acquisition Director of Eidos. "The many E3 awards, the extensive worldwide press coverage, the vibrant online player community, the strong global brand and Funcom's extensive MMO experience are all factors which bode well for the future of 'Age of Conan', and we will do our best to contribute to making it into a successful MMO franchise in the years to come." - Funcom

Age of Conan is shaping up to be well worth looking out for, promising a radically different approach to combat in a glutted fantasy MMORPG market. But will it be be competitive against the likes of World of Warcraft and Ever"never-say-die"Quest?

A Titan of Game Design Speaks

Brian Sullivan Interviewed

The man and his game
By now I'm sure many of you have had the chance to partake of Iron Lore's RPG flavoured action game, Titan Quest. For those who haven't, just imagine Blizzard's Diablo games with the hellish motif swapped for classical mythology and the old, chunky sprite-based graphics replaced with all the spiffy normal mapping and per-pixel lighting that today's fussy gamers expect.

One of the main men behind Iron Lore, wearing the hats of co-founder, president and lead-designer, is Brian Sullivan. Fans of Ensemble Studio's Age of Empires series may recognise his name as designer and producer on those games.

In an interview conducted by Gamasutra, Sullivan waxes lyrical on the production of Titan Quest and the decision to move away from the RTS genre and the effects of new-gen consoles and MMOs on the industry as a whole.

"The whole time I was working on Age of Empires games I always thought about doing an action RPG in the same setting, but with all the mythology thrown in," he said. "It was very nice to actually be able to develop this game after thinking about it for so many years."
