Coming 2008

I think the cleaners are on strike...
Although there are stories dating back to last year, Techland is now slowly filtering information on their upcoming survival horror title Dead Island.

Players will find themselves roaming a mysterious tropical island after the holiday of a lifetime turns to something more sinister. After surviving a harrowing plane crash, players will spend their time scouring the island to find a lost family member and trying to survive the island's deadly secret. Some of the key features that the fact sheet touts are:

- Ultra-realistic combat
¦ Intense and amazingly realistic hand-to-hand combat based on dynamic character moves and camera angles
¦ Realistic physical reactions of opponents to hits
¦ Exceptionally faithful and detailed damage model, showing damaged skin, muscles and even bones
¦ Innovative system of targeting and hitting the opponents gives you precise control and a realistic combat feel

- Advanced Artificial Life System
¦ AL system allows you to take advantage of instinctive behaviors of groups and individual opponents
¦ Living, breathing and dynamically changing ecosystem faced with the destructive influence of a spreading epidemic
¦ Realistic and spontaneous NPC behavior
¦ Through your actions, actively influence NPC reactions

- Non-linear gameplay
¦ Explore a vast, open world of a tropical island, on foot or in a variety of vehicles
¦ Freedom of choosing your allies and completing tasks that bring you closer to the finale
¦ Player decisions influence the way in which the game progresses, making it a multi-threaded story

- Fully Interactive Environments
¦ The ability to use all elements of the environment as weapons
¦ A liquid, gas and electricity physics simulation system, which allows you to create your own unique ways of eliminating enemies

- Official Press Release

While not much else is known about the game, the teaser website indicates that the tropical thriller will be available some time this year.

Not much: what Ubi is showing us for now
While news of Far Cry 2 first broke due to an asset leak last year, Ubisoft has officially announced the development of a sequel to Crytek's award-winning 2004 shooter, Far Cry.

At this stage not much is known about Far Cry 2 - with the official press release being conspicuously light on information - but lucky PC PowerPlay readers will only have to wait until July 25, as issue #142 will contain a preview to welcome you to Ubisoft's new jungle.

Although not much is known about the title, the Ubi marketing machine is out in full swing with vice president of marketing Tony Key stating:

Far Cry marked the beginning of a new era for shooters. An era of gorgeous graphics and of advanced artificial intelligence. We are confident that Far Cry 2 will have the same impact again on the FPS genre landscape.

- Official Press Release

Far Cry 2 will be hitting retailers in Q2 of 2008.

Dev comes clean about the Beta issues

The public beta is blowing the bugs out of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
A new update to Badman's Blog on the Enemy Territory community website has revealed some information about the Beta test.

While gamer feedback seems largely positive, there is an underlying issue with the PunkBuster service which is starting to frustrate gamers. Essentially, PunkBuster is not allowing many people in the Beta to automatically update their PunkBuster files, which results in them being booted from the server.

Badman states that the dev team is working closely with PunkBuster creators Even Balance to resolve these PunkBuster issues. Badman also gives players a workaround for this issue:

Sometimes firewall software, such as Norton Internet Security or Windows Firewall, can block outgoing PB packets and thus prevent your computer from talking with the master server. If you do have a software solution like that running in the background and are having this particular problem with PunkBuster, try either adding the PunkBuster services to the list of allowed programs or disabling the software temporarily, and see if PunkBuster updates itself.

If that doesn't work, you can update your local PunkBuster installation manually by doing the following. Please note that this is a workaround and not an official fix:

Grab pbsetup from the Even Balance website and run it. Add Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars and let pbsetup choose the game path automatically. Add Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars again and this time provide the following path (please note that this will only work with English versions of Windows XP; you will need to adjust the folder names appropriately for localized versions of Windows: \Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Local Settings\Application Data\Enemy Territory Quake Wars Public Beta\

Click "Check for Updates" and let it update both locations.

The blog also went on to reveal that a Beta 2 is in the works which will introduce another new map for players to test out. For more information on the Beta or PunkBuster keep your eyes tuned to the ET community website.
