But is it just another generic desert shooter mod?

Camping: one of the major problems of the INS mod
The highly anticipated Half-Life 2 mod Insurgency hit the internet in the last couple of days and news of its arrival has spread like wildfire through the online gaming community. If you've noticed that players have been dropping like flies on your favourite DoD, CS and BF2 servers, it's highly likely that they've ducked out to try this latest mod. I personally hopped into a server yesterday to surprisingly find that play had stopped for a few minutes in favour of talking about the mod.

The jury is out on whether Insurgency will prove to be the benchmark mod for Half-Life 2. Initial reports from gamers are evenly torn between hating and loving the first incarnation, and offer many suggestions for the mod team to address in the first patch.

Dear INS community,

Four years ago, in the mind of Andrew "Argyll" Spearin, Insurgency was born. Since then, the team has grown, the mod has matured and our fan base has expanded. Today, after all the hard work our developers, community liaisons and testers have put in, with both Pongles and I leading the way, we can finally say: It's ready.

We have put you, our loyal community, through a lot of ups and downs. While our development side was doing great, our PR side was lacking. It was a roller coaster ride just trying to get the mod to this point. A lot of crazy things happened that we can't really explain, but led to huge internal misunderstandings. It is no one's fault but our own and we have learned from this and many other mistakes. You can be rest assured to see many Insurgency updates in the future, where the mod should progress quite impressively over time, along with the development team's level of professionalism and its ability to cater to its community as well.

The entire development process of this mod was an amazing learning experience for all of us and we are confident when we say we are better at this now than we were at the beginning. I'm quite confident that you all will appreciate the fruits of our labor, and we look forward to playing with you guys on the server and hearing your feedback!

Includes Highway Tampa

DICE has tuned up the lasers and they're deadlier than ever
The official Battlefield website is now offering a beta patch for the futuristic shooter Battlefield 2142.

As well as the usual changes and fixes, this patch also includes the promised future version of the Highway Tampa map that is currently in beta testing for Battlefield 2. Some of the exploits and gameplay changes in the patch are:

- Fixed an exploit that would allow commanders to call Orbital and EMP strikes before it had fully recharged.
- The Clark RDX Shotgun can now detonate other nearby explosives.
- EU Assault Rifle recoil and deviation have been slightly reduced.
- Bianchi and Shuko LMGs recoil reduced.
- Clark Shotgun rate of fire increased.
- Added an autosave to kit customisations. After you customise a kit and spawn in with that kit, the customisation will be automatically saved until you change it and spawn in again. Note that you must spawn in with a particular kit for it to be saved.

- Battlefield Franchise Portal

So if you're ready to take on the new version of Highway Tampa, head on over to the download page and grab yourself a copy of the patch.

Intel and DICE collaborate on new BF2 map

"Keep your hands off my oil rig!"
A post on the EA Forums has offered players a glimpse of a new Battlefield 2 map entitled Highway Tampa.

This collaborative effort between Intel and DICE offers gamers a stretch of the Arabian Peninsula to blow to smithereens. The teasing post also implies that the map (in some form) will be ported across to another Battlefield title, with the most highly prospect being BF2142.

Through a collaborative effort Intel and EA DICE are rolling out a new Battlefield map for players to battle on. Highway Tampa is a vehicle focused map that offers a game experience similar to classic 1942 desert warfare. Explore this stretch of the Arabian Peninsula in your choice of vehicle and work with your team mates to conquer the map for your team. Download the beta, join in the servers, and drive, fly, and destroy your way to victory. Then drop by the EA forums and let us know what you think. Also keep your eyes to the future as this stretch of desert will see combat across two generations of Battlefield.

While the map is still in beta form, it does support ranked play. So head on over to the EA Forums to check out Highway Tampa in all of its glory.

No Black Box For You!

Because Doug Lombardi says so...

What once was seen shall never be
Over the weekend Valve has announced they have nixed the Black Box package for Half-Life 2: Episode Two, which was to include a copy of Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Half- Life 2: Episode Two. Instead, retail gamers will be forced to purchased the higher priced Orange Box which contains the new titles as well as a copy of Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One. This is quite an extraordinary turn of events, as most gamers that are looking forward to Valve's forthcoming three titles are more than likely to already own the previous two.

The good news about spending more money is that the package will come with three separate Steam activation codes, so if you already have a copy of HL2 and Episode One, you'll be able to give them away to a friend or family member.

We're going to have one package, The Orange Box, available on the PC (US$49.99) as well as the 360 and PS3 (US$ 59.99). In addition to the three new products -- Portal, Team Fortress 2, and Half-Life: Episode Two -- The Orange Box will also contain the full version of Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One. Those who purchase the PC version of The Orange Box will get three separate Steam product codes: One for the three new games, one for HL2, and one for Episode One. This way a PC Orange Box owner can give away their Half-Life 2 or Episode One unused Steam product codes if they don't need a copy of those games. We are excited to deliver the highest value of new gaming content ever offered in one box

- Official Press Release

The Orange Box of Half-Life 2 goodies will be hitting retail outlets later this year.

Will this make you buy the AGEIA PhysX card?

Confucius says "he with bigger gun usually wins"
Used to promote the AGEIA PhysX hardware, the full release of Artificial Studios' CellFactor: Revolution is now available online.

CellFactor: Revolution will see players taking destruction to a whole new level as they can manipulate and destroy almost every object in the game's many maps. If you tire of the AI opponents, the game has online capabilities so that you can challenge your mates to battle throughout the five levels of the game. Note that an Ageia PhysX card is not required to play this game, but only two of the five levels will be playable if you don't have one.

The game is available for download from the Strategy Informer site, and weighs in at around 880MB.
