Fans make Irrational speak up

Seeking questions and answers...
SShock2 recently held a Q&A with Irrational Games regarding the progress of BioShock, the "spiritual successor" to the System Shock games.

BioShock is still being kept under wraps, so the content of the Q&A doesn't delve into too much detail about the game itself. Instead, it focuses on the design challenges the team faced.

TTLG: One of your primary goals has been to design a game "where a walkthrough would be useless". How much of that goal has been achieved, what were/are your major problems in that regard, and what did you learn for future games?

Ken Levine: It's a process. Right now the biggest hurdle to this is story. We can use the microprocessor to spawn in bad guys, randomize loot, give the player a huge range of tools to choose from and have the AI interact with each other in groundbreaking ways. We can make a really emergent world that feels different to every player. What the microprocessor can't do is write a single line of interesting story. It can't create a single compelling character. It wouldn't know a plot twist if it woke up in bed with one.

- SShock2

With BioShock approaching its second year of development, it's only a matter of time before we start to hear more from Irrational about its submerged scare-fest.

Unreal Tournament 2007 delayed until... 2007

Coming soon... still
Representatives from Midway Games have announced that Unreal Tournament 2007 will not be ready in time for the 2006 Christmas holiday season. The latest estimate from Midway is the "first half of 2007".

The delay of Unreal Tournament 2007 leaves Gears of War as the only Unreal Engine 3-powered release for this year. As two of the flagship titles for the technology, the gaming community will have to wait just a little while longer to see what advancements the new engine will bring to the gaming world.

No COD3 for PCs, but another war is on the horizon

Normandy beach landings v.4.0
Many fans were disappointed when it was announced that Call of Duty, one of the best World War II shooters, would not be coming to PC for its third iteration. This left many unanswered questions about the franchise and whether fans would see the series return to where it began. Last week, some of those questions were answered.

COD2 HQ spoke to Grant Collier, President and CEO of Infinity Ward, about a number of topics related to the Call of Duty franchise. Infinity Ward were the developers of Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2, while Treyarch Games has been given the task to develop Call of Duty 3.

It was soon learned that while Treyarch was busy developing Call of Duty 3, Infinity Ward has been hard at work on Call of Duty 4. With a development team of 80 people, compared to the original 20 for Call of Duty, Call of Duty 4 should raise the bar for the WW II FPS genre.

At Infinity Ward, we have spent a lot of time trying to make games that put the players in the shoes of the soldiers who were fighting in those conflicts. If we can get the fans to try to be dodging bullets while they they sit playing the game, then we are doing something right. Traditionally, we have been focused on making sure that the single player game was extremely immersive while the multiplayer was balanced, fun, but not overly complicated. In the future, with Infinity Ward's greater depth in it's team, we now finally have the man (and woman) power to have specialists working on both, whose goals are to bring all aspects of our games to their full potential.

- Grant Collier

With Infinity Ward concentrating upon Call of Duty 4, this leaves the development of a possible Call of Duty 2 expansion up to another developer. If history repeats itself, Gray Matter would be the company to do it.

As Call of Duty 4 has not been officially announced, there is no current estimate for a release date.

Free Red Orchestra trial week and booster pack

It's free... Charge!
Tripwire Interactive, the creators of Red Orchestra, has announced a free full-game trial for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45. From Wednesday August 2 through to Monday August 7 (US time), players have the opportunity to download and play Red Orchestra via Steam and experience the game in its entirety before deciding to purchase it.

Along with the free trial, Tripwire Interactive has also released the latest free booster pack via Steam, which adds the following new features:

- A full new map, Lyes Krovy, a brutal close-quarters fight for a German trench-and-bunker position in a forest in northern Russia in the summer of 1944. Soviet forces attack a strongly-fortified position, while the Germans fight hard to hold them off. Lyes Krovy has rapidly become a favourite with the Tripwire test team!

- A new weapon system - smoke grenades. On select maps, infantry commanders will now have smoke instead of explosive grenades, which can be used to create quick cover for assault routes, or to momentarily blind the defenders. We're finding that clever use of smoke can change tactical stalemates at a stroke!

- Two new weapons - the German MP41 sub-machine gun and the Soviet M44 rifle.

- Numerous other changes to the tank armour penetration systems; the tank reloading system and changes to the victory conditions to prevent stalemates.

- Red Orchestra

Few multiplayer games on the market contain the kind of depth and realism of Red Orchestra, so if you've ever thought about giving it a go, now is the time.

Information on downloading the free Red Orchestra trial can be found here.

Please insert two dollars to continue...

Got change for one hundred?
Gaming website Siliconera has thirty new screenshots of the upcoming Half-Life 2 arcade game, "Half-Life 2: Survivor".

For those who haven't been following the progress of Survivor, the unit consists of a 32-inch 1360x768 wide screen LCD monitor and a six speaker 5.1 channel surround system. The game features three distinct modes: Battle mode, Bission mode and Story mode: Battle Mode will consist of a standard two team deathmatch, Mission Mode is a cooperative mode that sees players work to clear assigned missions, and Story Mode is a pure single player mode that offers a re-arranged version of the Half-Life 2 story.

Anyone dying to play Half-Life 2: Survivor better hope that their local arcade can shell out the $60000+ price tag for a deluxe four player unit, otherwise it's back to claiming that highscore in Frogger.
