Microsoft shows off PC version at E3

Epic fires back at rumours: not Vista exclusive!
Well, the rumours proved to be true. Today, Epic Games founder Cliff Bleszinski demonstrated the PC version of Gears of War at the Microsoft event at E3.

The highly acclaimed tactical shooter will make its way onto the PC and will be bursting with new content including "game editor, five new chapters, an additional multiplayer mode, new maps, and new achievements". The even better news for gamers is that it will be made compatible for both XP and Vista users.

If you are thinking about upgrading your rig, now is the time to think about it as this beautiful shooter will be testing your videocards later this year.

Gears of War Rumour Mill Picks Up Speed

E3 to provide all the answers?

Are the boys gearing up for a PC release soon?
The Gears of War rumour mill was again working at full pace this weekend, with revived rumour again sparking the "Gears of War on PC" debate.

Round 2 started after a gameplay video that has specifically been tagged as PC footage made its way to the internet. Kotaku states that the minute long montage shows off the "PC port's visual improvements and additional content, including new boss fights and new maps." The part of the video that really has gamers talking is that achievements were seen flashing on screen, which makes it a damn near certainty that the PC port will take advantage of the Games For Windows Live service. For those of you who don't have a X360, achievements are a set of titles that players unlock by accomplishing certain tasks during a game. While they don't provide any unlockable content, achievements are seen as a form of bragging rights between gamers.

While Gears of War's eventual PC welcome was one of Epic's worst kept secrets, gamers will still have to wait and see whether it is going to happen sooner rather than later. The major question now is whether GoW PC will be Vista exclusive or not. If the pundits are on the money, we should hear more about these developments at E3.

Overlord Patch

Upgrade your minions to version 1.1

Big monster pwns tiny minions everytime!
Those of you that are working your little minions to the bone will find welcome relief with the small patch for Overlord which fixes some critical bugs in the game.

The two bugs that this patch targets on are the possibility of losing saved data during the uninstall phase and a progress block which will means that you will be unable to complete the game.

Since release of Overlord we have become aware of two critical issues which were not discovered during the extensive internal testing at Codemasters.
The first issue relates to the uninstaller for both the demo and the full game and applies if you installed the game to a custom directory. Anyone who installed to a custom directory should install this patch.
The other issue relates to a potential progress block late in the full game. If you are unable to apply the patch, this document will describe how to avoid triggering this blockage.

For those of you that are unable to apply the patch, the official patch thread on the Codemasters forum also includes a workaround to the problem:

Workaround (for those who cannot patch)
There is no workaround once the bug has been triggered and saved, unless you have an Autosave slot with a save from an earlier part of the game.
However, you can avoid triggering the bug by:
1) When you find the first spoke have a minion pick it up, carry it to the wheel and attach it.
2) Only pick-up the second spoke if you have enough minions available (>12 in your horde, or in a Minion gate) to turn the wheel
3) When you have attached the second spoke, ensure that you turn the wheel fully before leaving the level.

If for some reason this is impossible (e.g. you have totally run out of minions) use the 'Change Autosave Slot' option in the pause menu at the start of The Brewery to keep the game progress up to this point stored in a different slot. The save game in this slot can be opened again later from the Load Game option in the main menu.
This use of 'Change Autosave Slot' is also a useful way to allow you save 'checkpoints' that you can return to at another time.

Triumph Studios and Codemasters have also revealed that another larger patch is in the works to help clean up some of the smaller issues within the game. The tiny 3.5MB patch for Overlord can be downloaded from the Codemasters download page.

Bust out your wand and take on the HP demo

"I think we are well and truly lost!"
With the movie release just around the corner, EA is putting the final touches on the next chapter of the Harry Potter series of games - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Like the previous games the action will revolve around the life of the famous boy wizard, but players will also be able to step into the shoes of other popular characters such as Headmaster Dumbledore and (spoilers!) Harry's outlaw godfather Sirius Black. While the game will feature prominent moments from the film, players will also be able to enjoy the life of being a Hogwarts student by performing missions for the portraits, playing wizarding games and attending classes. These mini games will allow players to unlock more sections of the Hogwarts allowing them to access hidden routes for exploring the castle.

So if you've got wizard envy, head on over to the download section of the Gamers Hell website and try out the Harry Potter demo.

Join The Agency

Bringing the spy game to your PC

Do you have what it takes to join The Agency?
While the buzz on this title has been generating over the past few weeks, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has finally officially announced the development of their espionage-themed online action-shooter, The Agency.

The Agency will allow players to immerse themselves in the dangerous world of espionage where they will assume the role of either an elite spy or a mercenary character. Players can choose to play solo or gather a group to tackle a wide selection of co-operative or competitive missions where they will visit exotic locales to infiltrate enemy organisations, steal secrets, and sabotage the enemy in an effort to build their own agency into a global power.

Persistent character development allows players to supplement their gear with exotic and powerful skills that make them feel like the elite agents they've always dreamt of becoming. Additionally, in lieu of the typical class systems in many other games, The Agency's approach is simply, "You Are What You Wear." Players will customize their character's attire based on the mission at hand, emphasizing combat, support, stealth, or even cover identities.

[...]

Operatives are "living loot" characters that wait in the wings for orders to build that new sports car, gather intel for the next mission, or provide that satellite scan to expose the enemy. As players advance through the game, they will collect more powerful Operatives that will better assist them with missions. Players can use their roster to help themselves or their team and even trade Operatives with other players.

"SOE is looking to take the online gaming industry to new places with The Agency, not only in terms of its theme, but also in its design. It's accessible to all types of players, blending genres and changing up established conventions. It's different from anything SOE has released before," said Matt Wilson, Director of Development, SOE Seattle. "Our goal is to break from traditional online games and provide players with a 'fun now, no waiting' gameplay experience in a dynamic, ever-evolving online world."

- Official Press Release

So whether you have a penchant for Martinis or red wigs, The Agency seems set to let you live out your wildest secret agent dreams. Keep your operatives trained on The Agency website for more intel.
