Season 1 coming to a retailer near you

Expect a box of adventuring hilarity this August
Word straight from Telltale Games has it that Season 1 of Sam & Max will be hitting the retail shelves across the world later this year thanks to The Adventure Company and JoWooD.

This marks the end to the boxed copy hiatus of one of adventure gaming's most beloved pairings, and The Adventure Company's President and CEO Richard Wah Kan was only too happy to be a part of it.

We are absolutely thrilled to be working with Telltale and the Sam & Max franchise. With such a rich history behind the Sam & Max name and the tremendous following of ardent Sam & Max fans, we're proud to play a part in the rebirth of such a legendary franchise.

Telltale's CEO Dan Connor's is also quite chuffed at the retail move.

Our internal development studio's been having a fun time working with Steve [Purcell]'s characters and we're looking forward to getting the games out to new audiences in the Fall.

Sam & Max are expected to hit the retail world this coming August.

Funcom Says "Bye Bye" To Offline Games

Blame the pirates...

If and when we see Zoe again, we'll need a broadband connection to enjoy her adventuring
In an interesting turn, Dreamfall developer Funcom has announced it will no longer be developing typical offline games. In a report with Norwegian newspaper E24, Funcom is switching to full time development of MMO games, attributing the decision to the pirates of the videogame industry.

According to Funcom's Trond Arne Aas, prior to its release, there were a reported 200,000 illegal copies of Dreamfall floating around. He also estimates that for every PC game sold, there are 3 to 10 times as many stolen copies on home PCs.

While Funcom aren't newcomers to the MMO world (they are behind Anarchy Online and its numerous expansions) it is sad to think that one of the last companies pushing the old school adventure game is now giving up on the genre. Has the death knell for adventure gaming truly sounded?

More episodic content on the way

Which characters will return for Dreamfall Chapters?
Making good on a rumour that was circulating late last year, Funcom has announced the development of Dreamfall Chapters.

The aim of this project is to continue the 'Longest Journey' story and deliver further adventures in Arcadia in the form of episodic content (think Half-Life 2 Episodes) to bring short spurts of adventuring enjoyment to PC users. It's a move made possible by the Norwegian government, which is funding the project.

"We will be researching an online-only continuation of the epic 'Longest Journey' saga, and we very much look forward to develop new chapters to the Dreamfall gaming community," said Trond Arne Aas, CEO of Funcom. "To see the Norwegian government take such an active role in nurturing the local game development industry is impressive. In return for their trust we aim to deliver a modern adventure game with unique qualities."

...

Each new installment of 'Dreamfall Chapters' will initially be delivered as online-only content, but there may be retail releases with combined chapters, both for console and PC, at a later stage.

- Official Press Release

Currently Funcom hasn't offered a time frame for the release of the first episode of Dreamfall Chapters, but keep your eyes peeled for more information at the Funcom website.

Get in touch with Spidey's darker side

"Giddyup, little taxi!"
With the web-slinger's third theatrical outing ready to hit the silver screen this May, details are filtering out about the videogame version that will closely tie in with the movie.

To go along with the standard combo system of previous games, Spider-Man will be given a whole new set of moves that will make the symbiote (black suit) Spider-Man even more powerful than the regular garden variety version. These powerful moves will include a variety of more vicious standard attacks and combos as well as the new rage system to really bring out the symbiote's dark powers.

For more news and downloadable goodies on your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, head on over to the game's official website, but do note that joining a mailing list is a requirement to access most of the information.

GTA 2 joins other free Rockstar titles

You don't even need to five finger discount it!
After a long battle, GTA 2 is finally available as a free download from the Rockstar Games website, joining other classic Rockstar titles such as GTA and Wild Metal.

So what's the catch? A free download of any of Rockstar's classic series of games requires you to join the Rockstar mailing list in exchange for some free gaming goodness.

Now, longtime Grand Theft Auto fans can revisit this classic entry in the series - and new jacks who missed out on this early franchise title can further discover Grand Theft Auto's roots - absolutely free. GTA2 has been completely optimized for play on modern PCs and is available gratis for all registrants to the Rockstar Games mailing list.

- Rockstar Games

For the minor annoyance of joing a mailing list, the Rockstar Classics are definitely a worthy addition to any PC gaming collection, so check out the Rockstar Games site and get downloading!

UPDATE: Thanks to the keen eyes of some forum members, it has come to our attention that GTA 2 has been available for a while already ... guess we were too busy still playing the first one to notice. But for those of you that are yet to play this classic piece of gaming, sign up and download it now!
