Manage the sport of kings

This must be the stunt mode
A day after Delta Blues took top honours at the Melbourne Cup, Cyanide Studios has released a demo of Horse Racing Manager 2. It contains a gallop race, a trot race, two French race tracks, and shows off night and day races and different ground conditions.

The title explains everything there is to know, really, but here's the description from the website:

Horse Racing Manager 2 is a sports management game set in the horse racing universe. With 3 game modes (stable, jockey and bettor) that can be played alone or with other players, and 3 types of races (flat, hurdles and trot racing), Horse Racing Manager 2 is the ultimate game for all horse lovers and horse racing fans.

You can get the 280 MB demo from 3D Gamers, Gamers Hell and Worthplaying.

Trackmania United Gets Limited Early Release

Early online release aimed at track creators

At a place called vertigo
French publisher Focus Home Interactive has announced unusual plans for the release of Trackmania United. Several months ahead of its North American release in February 2007, Nadeo's puzzle-cum-racer will be offered as an online purchase and download from 17 November.

The download includes the full game, but if you want a copy you'll have to be quick, because only 10,000 copies will be made available in November. Why the staggered release? Focus says it "will allow fans to get a jump start on developing content to share with the TrackMania United community".

User-created content has been a big part of Trackmania's success, so giving creators a couple of months to crank out new tracks before the wider release makes some sense. But it also opens the door to rampant piracy if impatient gamers can't wait until February. Presumably Focus knows what it's doing.

Too many soccer games are barely enough

This can only end in yellow
A demo has been released for the sixth edition of the highly-regarded Pro Evolution Soccer series from Konami Tokyo. The demo offers an exhibition match between two teams from Czech Republic, Italy, Spain or Sweden.

PES 6 promises better AI and more control over previous games in the series, as well as new gameplay modes like International Challenge, which puts you in control of your national team.

The 207 MB demo is available from 3D Gamers, Gamers Hell and Worthplaying. The full game should be appearing in Australian stores from today.

Now set for February

Deadline Unlimited
FiringSquad has confirmation from Atari that the PC, PS2 and PSP versions of Test Drive Unlimited have been delayed until February next year.

The game was delayed numerous times before its eventual launch on the Xbox 360 last month. The other versions were originally scheduled for October, but evidently need a few more months of work yet.

You can learn more about the "massively open online racer" at its website.

Take EA's arcade racer for a spin

That looks familiar
EA has released a demo for its illegal street racing game Need For Speed Carbon (it's the street racing that's illegal, not the game). The demo offers a Circuit track, a Drift track, an unlockable Canyon Duel, and a choice of three cars to drive.

The minimum system requirements are listed as a 1.7 GHz processor, a 64 MB video card and 512 MB RAM.

You can grab all 640 MB of it from 3D Gamers, Gamers Hell, Worthplaying, or just about any other download site. If your download quota's getting low, there's also a new movie available from the same websites. The full game is due out in November.
