Guild Wars expansion and sequel in development
They're dancing in the aisles at the prospect of another Guild Wars game
One of the worst kept secrets of the last month is finally out of the bag as ArenaNet has officially announced the development of Guild Wars: Eye of the North and Guild Wars 2.
Eye of the North is an expansion that promises to add a lot of new content to keep existing fans happy. Some of the loot on the itinerary includes 18 multi-level dungeons, 150 new skills across all of the 10 Guild Wars professions, 10 new Heroes to add to your party, 40 new armour sets and a host of new items and weapons to fill up your stash with. Eye of the North will also provide a tangible link to Guild Wars 2 by providing a Hall of Monuments where players' accomplishments are noted and eventually inherited by their Guild Wars 2 characters, which will in turn unlock exclusive items and bonuses in Guild Wars 2.
NCsoft® Europe and ArenaNet® today revealed their exciting plans for the future of the hugely successful Guild Wars® franchise. The companies announced that development already is underway on a full sequel to the original Guild Wars games. Guild Wars 2™ will draw from the game mechanics that made the original Guild Wars one of the most popular online games ever and will add a fully persistent world. It was also revealed that, like its predecessors, Guild Wars 2 will not have a subscription fee. No launch date was announced, but the ArenaNet team anticipates that Guild Wars 2 will go into beta sometime in the second half of 2008.
In addition, ArenaNet developers are working on the first true expansion for the Guild Wars franchise, Guild Wars Eye of the North™. Due to hit store shelves during the Q3 2007, Guild Wars Eye of the North™ will require at least one of the previous Guild Wars campaigns (Prophecies™, Factions™, or Nightfall™) in order to play. It's a game that will benefit long-time players of the Guild Wars games, with all of the content targeting existing Guild Wars characters.
- Official Press Release
Eye of the North will be hitting our shelves later this year, whilst ArenaNet believes that we'll be seeing Guild Wars 2 in stores around 2009.

LEGO like you've never seen it...
Will the LEGO brick as we know it become obsolete?
In a surprising announcement, The LEGO Group has revealed that they will be collaborating with NetDevil to create a LEGO MMORPG game. This follows up on a story posted late last year where NetDevil revealed they were in the works of sealing a deal with "a major toy company".
The jury is out on whether the MMO will be based on an existing LEGO franchise like Bionicles or Star Wars, or whether it will be a completely new intellectual property. While it is an intriguing premise, the question remains: how does one turn the humble LEGO brick into an MMO?
"As children around the world continue to spend more time online, we are developing new and engaging ways for them to interact with our brand," said Lisbeth Valther Pallesen, Executive Vice President, Community, Education and Direct Division LEGO Group. "The LEGO brand represents construction, creativity and problem solving -- values that complement the MMOG market. By merging the online world of social interaction with physical play, the LEGO brand is providing new experiences for children, as well as fans. NetDevil's technological capability, openness to work with a large community, and enthusiasm for the LEGO brand make them a natural partner."
"Playing with LEGO bricks and developing online worlds are both creative activities. To bring them together is deeply professionally satisfying and we look forward to working with the LEGO team," said Scott Brown, president of NetDevil.

Could we be tossing the real LEGO away in favour of virtual brick-building? Stay tuned for more news on the LEGO MMO.

WoW expansion flies off shelves
 It even surprised her
We all knew The Burning Crusade would be popular, but not quite this popular. Blizzard has announced that the World of Warcraft expansion sold 2.4 million copies in North America and Europe -- on the first day of release.
That's more copies than most games sell in total, and unsurprisingly makes Burning Crusade the fastest-selling PC game ever on both continents.
The figures are even more astounding when you consider the number of WoW players in those regions. While there are eight million WoW subscribers worldwide, Blizzard's figures say there are about 3.5 million players in total in North America and Europe, which means the majority of them bought the expansion on the first day. That's some pretty fierce fan loyalty.

Bill Roper on subscription gaming
 The keeper of the secrets
Shack News has delivered on the promised interview with Flagship Studios Bill Roper and after reading through it, it is clear to see why Bill's comments gave the Shack's reporters the impression that a subscription for the online component of the game was inevitable.
But in a follow up after the interview, Roper has stated that his comments were intended in a "theoretical context" and that the monthly fee subscription model is "only one option currently under evaluation by the studio and its publishers." So even after the "clarifying" interview with the guy in the know, gamers are still left searching for answers. Now we play the waiting game as Flagship decides on which model they want to go with. Note to game devs: stop talking in circles and tell it like it is!
We'll probably have some kind of detail in the next month or two as to our pricing model, but the design is both a standalone as well as an MMO, so we want to be able to hit both markets just like we did with the Diablo titles. There are a lot of people that in some instances actually can't get online, and there are also people who are online but for gaming they aren't sure if they want to make that commitment to pay the monthly fee and go online. They can get the game and play the standalone, and get 30 or 40 hours' worth of gameplay. If they like that, they can go online and we'll have a good ramp of some kind for them to go online and check out some of the services. Exactly how we handle that, whether it'll be a trial or whether they can check out some of the game for free, we're still hammering out the final details. Then beyond that it will be pay to play, and again we're about a month out from announcing more on that. But what you're getting with that service is you're getting 24/7 customer service, secure servers, databases, and the biggest thing is that you're getting continuing content. We'll have a full dev team that's on the project from day one. Actually, right when you buy the game, when it launches there will already be content available that you can't get in the single-player -- additional monsters, areas, all the community and economy things, you'll be able to form guilds, auction houses, all those things you expect from MMOs.
