Some people set to "disappear" from the real world

Something you can't do in real life
Virtual worlds researcher Edward Castronova has told the BBC he expects people to start disappearing from the "real" world as virtual worlds become more pervasive and popular.

Castronova made the comments while discussing his new book, Exodus To The Virtual World. He also expects "everyone" to be using virtual worlds to some degree within ten years. He might not be including poverty-stricken people more concerned with their next meal than their Facebook page, but we know what he means.

He said while some people will be colonists - "the virtual frontier opens up and off they go and disappear" - others will just use virtual worlds to get together with distant family and friends.

But he stressed there will be a group of people that spends all their lives there, and that the big question is the size of this group.

"We forget how many people there are, and we have to ask ourselves, how exciting is the game of life for most people out there?" he said.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, according to Castronova, because virtual worlds are social places, and spending a lot of time in them could have benefits.

Tabula Rasa Delayed

Devs claim it's not "stable, fast, fun" yet

The guns will be ready to fire this November
Although it has been declared gold for over a month, the makers behind Tabula Rasa have announced that the game will not make its original live date of October 19. Instead, preorder customers will have access to the game at the end of October, while the rest of the us will have to wait until November 2nd before we can get our hands on the game.

A post on the official website by Starr Long cites this delay being due to the fact that the game needs some polishing time to address several balance and stability issues.

Many of you have heard my mantra for game development: "Stable, Fast, Fun. In that order." We need a little more time to make that happen.

To this end we are moving our Pre-Order headstart date to 10/30/07 and our commercial service start date to 11/2/07. This short but critical amount of time will give us time to address several issues including stability and balance as well as allowing our players to test the continent of Ligo (L38+) and our major changes to crafting for a few weeks rather than a few days. Our entire development staff feels this extra time is needed as does our beta community. We feel confident that this extra time will make a difference on launch day.

That said we are excited about launching the game and moving into a "live" environment where the entire future of the AFS is ahead of us. Expect more posts from Richard Garriott, Paul Sage, and other dev staff over the next few days as they discuss plans for elder content and content updates both long and short term. One of us will also be posting to the website every Friday in order to directly address your feedback, which you can submit via the Feedback Form found here on the RGTR.com website.

See you in game as we wrap up this final leg of testing and get ready for the end-of-beta blow out!

Plateau not yet reached

He just saw the subscriber numbers
It was only a matter of time. World of Warcraft now boasts a playerbase nine million strong. That's a growth of one million subscribers since January this year, when the Burning Crusade expansion was released.

Blizzard says it expects subscriber growth to continue with the imminent release of The Burning Crusade in China, where the game is run by the fittingly-named The9.

"We're thrilled that gamers around the world have continued to embrace World of Warcraft so enthusiastically," said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment®. "We've worked hard to provide a compelling experience for our players, and we plan to continue updating the game with exciting new content for them to enjoy for many years to come."

- Blizzard

Meanwhile, Blizzard's MMOG will continue making its cultural mark with the upcoming release of a World of Warcraft comic, published by DC Comics. Here's the premise:

When a human is found unconscious on the shores of Kalimdor, with no memory of who he is or how he arrived there, how will he survive? Enslaved by an Orc Shaman, he must fight for survival against members of both the Alliance and the Horde. Will he strike the uneasy balance with the other races he'll need to find the secrets of his past?

- DC Comics

The comic is set for release in November, and in the meantime you can view some concept art here.

Get your hands on exclusive goodies

Unlock the Eye of the North this August
The folk at ArenaNet have revealed the particulars on the preorder scheme for the upcoming Guild Wars expansion, Eye of the North.

For those that choose to preorder the game (and get in early), ArenaNet will be releasing a prerelease bonus pack that is scheduled to arrive in stores later this week. The bonus pack will contain exclusive in-game items, a trial DVD which unlocks every previous chapter of the Guild Wars saga, and access to the Guild Wars: Eye of the North Sneak Peek Weekend, which is scheduled for August 24–26.

Guild Wars: Eye of the North is the first ever expansion to the subscription-free Guild Wars franchise of fantasy online roleplaying games, which will be released to the public on August 31, 2007. This expansion will provide new content accessible to players who have any of the previously released Guild Wars campaigns (Guild Wars, Guild Wars: Factions, or Guild Wars: Nightfall).

Players who pre-order Guild Wars: Eye of the North will gain access to the Sneak Peek Weekend, August 24–26, 2007, where they will be able to log into the game for a first look at Eye of the North. Players will be able to explore the Far Shiverpeaks region of the world, home of the barbaric Norn. Everything players obtain during the Sneak Peek Weekend, including items, XP, Heroes, and loot, will be permanent and available when the expansion goes live.

The Guild Wars: Eye of the North prerelease bonus pack also comes with exclusive weapons, including the Glacial Blade, the Hourglass Staff, and the Darksteel Longbow. These new weapons are based on the winning designs from the Guild Wars Design-a-Weapon Contest held earlier this year. In addition, the prerelease bonus pack includes a Guild Wars Trilogy Trial DVD that provides access to all three of the Guild Wars campaigns for a special trial promotion lasting 10 hours or 14 days, whichever comes first.

"We believe this feature-packed prerelease delivers real value to our players," said Mike O'Brien, co-founder of ArenaNet. "From past experience, we expect the Sneak Peek Weekend alone to be hugely popular, and players won't want to miss this chance to get a leg-up before the game goes live."

- Official Press Release

For more information on the prerelease bonus pack, head on down to your favourite game retailer to see if they will be getting them in stock. Alternatively, Aussie gamers will be able to order it from the PlayNC from July 21st.
