It's a free game!

When Aliens Attack!
Take a few pesky aliens from the film Mars Attacks!. Add a dash of Quake 3. Blend gently until your finished product looks like Alien Arena 2007.

The follow-up to the freeware online shooter Alien Arena 2006, Alien Arena 2007 has revamped much of its content over the last year; now containing an impressive thirty-seven levels, five game modes, six mutators, bots, ten player characters and eight weapons to choose from.

Alien Arena is a fast paced, furious frag fest with arenas ranging from the small, to the massive. With a large built-in player base, it's never hard to find a good match going on, at any hour of the day. The community is friendly, as well as prolific. Dozens of maps, models, and various accessories have been created by community members to add on to the game experience.

New for AA2K7 is Team Core Assault, a mode in which players must work together to disable their enemy team's central metal spider. Don't forget about the Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Deathball, and All Out Assault mode (in which players can enter vehicles) either.

Download Alien Arena 2007 as quickly as you can, 'cause it'll be dark soon, and the noobs mostly come at night... mostly.

New SDK hampers development

This beta be good!
Developing a mod for an engine like Source can be a blessing and a curse -- for fans of the upcoming Team Fortress Classic remake, Fortress Forever, Source is proving to be the latter. It looks like the latest SDK update from Valve has thrown an Engineer's spanner into the works:

Although we hit a bit of a snag with the Linux dedicated server crashing issue that was introduced in the recent SDK updates, we've got a pair of windows servers going now so we are getting back on track with the beta plans. More on this soon!

- Fortress Forever

To make it up to their fans, the Fortress Forever team has released some new screenshots featuring the new Pyro flamethrower, as well as some action shots from Hunted -- all of which can been drooled over at the Fortress Forever media page.

Free Game: Tremulous

It's a free game!

Terrificuous... um...
Last year's release of the full Quake 3 source code, available under the GPL licence, has seen an explosion of free standalone games being released by small development teams. Tremulous is one of the more interesting, having recently made the switch from a Quake 3 mod to a standalone release.

Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more...

- Tremulous

I know what you're thinking: it sounds like a Natural Selection knock-off, right? No. Tremulous has made it quite clear that this is not the case, stressing that both mods began development around the same time, with Tremulous taking much of its inspiration from Gloom for Quake 2 more than anything.

What the heck are you waiting for? Download Tremulous and give it a go. It's free and it's 95MB - what do you have to lose?

Along with Forgotten Hope 2, the European-themed Point of Existence 2 remains one of most eagerly anticipated mods for Battlefield 2. So with the second year anniversary of the original Point Of Existence mod approaching, the team has decided to let the community in on a little tidbit of information:

As was declared in Update #76 we have some very thrilling news tonight. The news that undoubtedly everyone wants to know, WHEN WILL POE RELEASE!!
