Far Cry mod gets patched

That's Assault, brother!
With all the hype and fanfare that surrounded the release of Far Cry, it came as a surprise to many observers that the mod community never really took hold and thrived. However, one mod that did make a name for itself amongst Far Cry fans was the Assault Coop mod, turning the regular Assault mode into a deadly struggle between human players and AI enemies.

Far Cry fans rejoice, the Assault Coop 1.1 patch has finally been released:

Hi all again! this is the 1.1 patch for the co-op mod "Assault Coop". This patch will repair several bugs seen in the game and will add several new materials. Around 20 maps will be added and updated! Follow the simple instructions to install the patch and you'll be just fine.

An incredible amount of time and energy has been invested into Assault Coop 1.1 by its lone developer flameknight7 - a quick glance over its extensive change list is testament to this fact. Given that Far Cry can now be found lurking in bargain bins for under twenty dollars, it's fair to say that this mod would go down a treat at your next LAN session.

Think "28 Days Later"... then think again

Killing Floor 2.0
The development team behind the Unreal Tournament 2004 mod, Killing Floor, has announced (with little fanfare) the much awaited 2.0 release of their survival horror total conversion:

Killing Floor 2.0 has been release to the public as of today - August 6th 2006. You can find the client at the following locations (more to come!) I dont wanna waste time blabbing about the features or the graphics, or all the crap that's great about it - just download it and try. It's only about 200 megabytes, so you can afford to spend the time giving it a try!

- ModDB.com

According to the mod's description on ModDB.com, Killing floor is set in London, with the story revolving around a "laboratory conducting human experiments in cloning and biological augmentation ... a top secret series of synthetic combat drugs which would enhance the effectiveness of soldiers in the field". Like the plot of most zombie-shooters, something went terribly wrong. "There were reports that the lab had been compromised, and that the subjects were behaving abnormally. And then silence. Several days later, twisted shapes began to emerge from the confines of the lab, into the city above". Spooky.

Okay, aside from infected "people" and the fact the mod is set in London, it's not that much like the movie 28 Days Later. Having said that, Killing Floor 2.0 is definitely worth the 200MB download!

Doom 3 gets Rotoscoped

Baldness in rotoscope
Let's face it, who hasn't been impressed by the previews for the upcoming film A Scanner Darkly? The incredible blend of live-action and animation used in the film is a modern variation on an old technique commonly known as "rotoscoping" - a process where animators trace live action movement, frame by frame, for use in animated films.

Imagine if you could play Doom 3 in full rotoscoped glory? Well now you can, all thanks to the developer of the Doom 3 Rotoscope Cartoon Shader:

Rotoscope is a graphical modification for Doom3, which enables high quality, real-time cartoon shading. Unlike other cartoon shaders, this modification preserves most of the graphical detail of the original game. Nevertheless, the visual experience of Doom3 is completely changed, and the onscreen display looks like a typical modern cartoon. Rotoscope can be used to make realistically looking comic stories, it can supply artistic effects for machinima, or it can simply be used to re-experience the classic Doom3 experience with a new "look-and-feel".

As Keanu would say... "woah!".

Dystopia Map Update

Dystopia is set to Undermine

Groovy
Project Manager "Fuzzy", from the Half-Life 2 mod Dystopia, has revealed some new snapshots and information about an interesting new map named "Undermine" that will hopefully appear in the next release.

July finishes off with hope of an SDK update hanging in the air. To help spread this morale boost from Team Dystopia to the player base, this months wrap up focuses on the level TwinCannoN has been toiling away on for the last couple of months.

Undermine is set in a corporate mining facility, which the punks are attempting to shutdown the extraction process. More than previous Dystopia maps, players will need to work together in meatspace and cyberspace to come away with the victory.

As you can see from the first screenshot, Undermine's cyberspace environment has a level of detail above what was included in the demo levels. This is just the beginning of the overhaul that Version 1 will usher into Dystopia's unique cyberspace experience.

- Dystopia

The team describe Dystopia as a "modifcation which places the player into tense combat situations in a high tech world spanned by computer networks. As either Punks or Corp Mercenaries the player will fight through the physical world to gain access, via jack-in terminals, to cyberspace. Cyberspace is a three dimensional representation of the world's network. Inside cyberspace players will launch programs to hack into systems linked to the physical world, fight off enemy hackers or defend critical systems".

Dystopia is definitely shaping up as one of the most interesting, polished and unique multiplayer mods in development for Half-Life 2 - and it is developed by Australians.

High quality images from the new map can be found here.
