It's probably the most controversial game of all time. The gaming community seems to be divided in half, with some applauding the game for giving the players increased choice, while others criticised it for not quite reaching the same lofty standards as its predecessor, particularly in terms of story.

With number 3 on the way, we thought we'd take a look back at Invisible War. Is it really a bit rubbish, or does it represent a high point in the history of FPS, rivalling the epiphany that was Deus Ex?

PCPP#013: X-Wing vs TIE Fighter Review
Back when Lucasart's Star Wars games were actually good, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter ruled the flight combat roost. And in the eyes of some, it still does. Regardless, there's no doubt that the game is a classic flight title, taking the visceral nature of true dogfighting out into space...

Spies never get old. James Bond has proved that there's something about this particular occupation that continues to resonate, regardless of time period. Spycraft: The Great Game is likewise, a timeless classic. Sure, the low res chafes a bit, and the acting, by today's lofty standards, can seem a bit hokey, but it is still a blast. Combining tedious detective legwork, and tension filled moments at both ends of a gun, Spycraft brings you as close as a gamer has ever gotten to living the life of a real spy. And by the end of the game, you're guaranteed to be feeling like one.

The big unknown is how long Unreal will hold the title, but for the moment, this is the Best Game Ever.

John Carmack must be having nightmares. It's been well over three years in the making and just when everyone thought it was vapourware, like all the other first-person shooters slated for release this year, Unreal has finally been released. Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to the next level in gaming...

When PCS aren't PC...

Have you ever felt the need to steal cars just for the hell of it? A desire to hijack a bus with the aim of blowing it up in the middle of a busy street? Of course we don’t want to do these things in the real world, (well most of us anyway) and Government officials please take note: Grand Theft Auto will not transform us from socially responsible gamers into criminals intent on such deviant activities. Although after playing GTA for a while, that Porsche parked around the corner from my house does look very inviting…

Tomb Raider, a game that was praised for its “utterly amazing graphics”, has definitely left behind a legacy. Winning the Origins Award for Best Action Computer Game of 1997, Tomb Raider quickly became popular, not just in the video gaming world.

Of course, we all know associate the game with Lara Croft – the character that spurred great debate (“Is she a heroine or are the game developers just trying to appeal to teenage boys?”). Nevertheless, Tomb Raider was one of a kind that hasn’t been quickly forgotten. March Stepnik’s article reminds us all what “stunning gameplay” used to mean…

No single game has so united the staff and contributors of PCPP against the magazine's readers. Sure, there are those of you out there in newsagent land who love Deus Ex. But the issue is you don't love it enough. And of course our position on your position on the sequel is well-documented.

But everyone's opinion of Deus Ex is clouded by the seven years of history the game now has. So now here's the review that started it all. It's worth it just for David Wildgoose's totally awesome and prophetic "AGAINST" comment.

From the makers of Diablo and Warcraft comes Starcraft. Isn't it nice when expectations are exceeded?

“Starcraft is a disappointment, and I just don't like it.” Those were my words to fellow gamer buddies back when I first had the chance to take it for an initial test drive. It's not uncommon for first time Starcraft players to be overheard grumbling and feeling letdown. The long delays coupled with copious amounts of hype are going to be hard for any game, no matter how good the quality to live up to...

3D action with attitude. Duke rocks!

They don't make 'em like this anymore!
With the shareware version already available for several months now and, in fact, featured upon the cover CD of our first issue, most of you will have formed your own firm conclusions about Duke Nukem 3D by now. But, I dare say there might just be a couple of people out there slightly slow on the uptake (or perhaps, he says optimistically, simply waiting for the definitive review), who have yet to experience the singularly brutal charm of this superb game. So, in the interests of fairness to everybody, I will assume none of you have seen it and start right at the beginning.

commentary: Don't laugh. Our Doom 3 previews are probably going to look even worse by 2016.

Quake needs to be very special to live up to the hype. Going on the primitive deathmatch beta id recently released, things are looking good

Few words stir a gamer’s heart like Quake does. Having conquered the world with Doom, id Software have been busy lads of late, alternating between taking phone calls from their Ferrari mechanics and knocking up another masterpiece. Great expectations have been placed on id, but whatever form Quake takes, it will surely disappoint some, just as it will unconditionally please must of the rest of us.

A visit to the action games newsgroup on the internet shortly after ANY new 3D game is released shows heated debate. All new games are compared to Quake, despite the fact that until recently nobody outside id actually knew anything about it. This ridiculous situation reached new heights after the Duke Nukem 3D demo appeared, the Duke vs. Quake threads ran for many screens and were largely composed of meaningless and parochial posturing.

Then, two weeks later, id blew everyone away by releasing an unusual form of demo onto the net...
