Some people set to "disappear" from the real world

Something you can't do in real life
Virtual worlds researcher Edward Castronova has told the BBC he expects people to start disappearing from the "real" world as virtual worlds become more pervasive and popular.

Castronova made the comments while discussing his new book, Exodus To The Virtual World. He also expects "everyone" to be using virtual worlds to some degree within ten years. He might not be including poverty-stricken people more concerned with their next meal than their Facebook page, but we know what he means.

He said while some people will be colonists - "the virtual frontier opens up and off they go and disappear" - others will just use virtual worlds to get together with distant family and friends.

But he stressed there will be a group of people that spends all their lives there, and that the big question is the size of this group.

"We forget how many people there are, and we have to ask ourselves, how exciting is the game of life for most people out there?" he said.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, according to Castronova, because virtual worlds are social places, and spending a lot of time in them could have benefits.
