Gamers have their way with the English language

w00t? pwned?
American dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster has named "w00t" its word of the year. It won a poll on the publisher's website, which asked visitors to vote for one of twenty nominated words.

Despite the accolade, w00t doesn't seem to be in Merriam-Webster's online dictionary yet. The Reuters article went to thinkgeek.com for the word's etymology:

"w00t belongs to gamers the world over. It seems to have been derived from the obsolete 'whoot' which essentially is another way to say 'hoot' which itself is a shout or derisive laugh," Think Geek said on its Web site.

"But others maintain that w00t is the sound several players make while jumping like bunnies in Quake III," it added, referring to a popular video game.

So that's it then, another cult word ruined by popular knowledge. Time to find a new one.
