I hate business travel. I really do. You may have noticed the past two days have been somewhat lacking in blog entries from my good self (he says in the vain hope that people would ever miss his daily musings). The reason for this communication blackout was nothing other than a simple business trip. Get up at some ungodly hour, fly back late at night, spend the following day in a bleary eyed, barely coherent mess. Trust me, it is no good. However I did manage to find some positives out of my most recent experience and it strangely coincided with the recent birthday of that PC gaming giant Quake.
I don't get to read anywhere near as much as I'd like. I lead a pretty busy life and often that means reading time is sacrificed. But here is the great thing about business trips… I get to read. And boy, did I pick a ripper of a book to read on that hellish journey from Melbourne to Sydney and back yesterday.

I'm not one for book reviews, books are generally far too intimate an experience to be able to adequately pass on an objective statement of quality to another reader but I did want to take today's blog to recommend a title regardless. Okay so I may be a little slow off the mark on this one but please, for the love of God and all that is holy, go pick up a copy of Masters of Doom by David Kushner.

I'm sure many of you reading this are laughing right now:

"He only just read Masters of Doom? This guy calls himself a gamer?"

Well a hearty 'bah' to you my friends, I'm secure in my geekdom. Seriously though, this is a rollicking great read about the lives of John Romero and John Carmack. Sure there was the fairly public falling out between the two but I certainly wasn't aware of the rollercoaster those two personalities took themselves and others on as id rose to stardom.

It certainly causes you to reassess some of your opinions regarding the two men as well. Romero bashing has always been something of a hobby of mine since he told me to "Suck it down" with his infamous Daikatana advertising campaign but Masters of Doom made me feel some level of empathy for the guy. On the flipside I can't say I'm that big a fan of the robotic voiced Carmack now either. Now I'm not so naïve as to think that this book represents the one true and accurate account of id but you're certainly given a different perspective than you would get otherwise.

Regardless I'm sure many of you have already read this book and are simply nodding at the screen but if you haven't and no one has told you to. Please do yourself a favour and give it a look. If anything it is worth it just to hear about Warren Spector telling Romero that he wouldn't be making anyone his bitch and that he would be the classy arm of Ion Storm. Atta boy Wozza!
