Terrificuous... um...

Last year's release of the full Quake 3 source code, available under the GPL licence, has seen an explosion of free standalone games being released by small development teams. Tremulous is one of the more interesting, having recently made the switch from a Quake 3 mod to a standalone release.

Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more...

I know what you're thinking: it sounds like a Natural Selection knock-off, right? No. Tremulous has made it quite clear that this is not the case, stressing that both mods began development around the same time, with Tremulous taking much of its inspiration from Gloom for Quake 2 more than anything.
