Now you can be Otto

Don't leave them in the cold
Darren: I don't normally do this, but with a game like Bus Driver, it's hard to resist. And with two of our news contributors both submitting this story, it's clear that this is a game that demands attention. Over to the newsies...

John: If you've ever wondered if bus driving is your life's calling (and who hasn't?), you'll soon be able to find out. SCS Software has announced Bus Driver, which is just what it sounds like: a bus driving simulator.

Kimberley: This simulation will provide people with a real account of the life of a bus driver -- from running 30 minutes late, careless driving and jamming on the brakes. The virtual bus driver will be able to use every trick in the book to annoy their passengers, although if you want to progress in the game it's best that you don't.

John:

As a bus driver, you have to drive to a timetable on a planned route, whilst obeying traffic rules, and taking care not to upset or injure your passengers. This makes Bus Driver unlike any other driving game - the experience of driving a bus is very different from blazing through a racing circuit.

- SCS Software

No argument there. But will it be a fun game? It was certainly fun driving a bus in Grand Theft Auto, but that's because they're useful for destroying other cars. Ferrying kids to schools, basketball teams to stadiums, and prisoners to prisons, obeying roads rules at all times is not your typical gaming experience.

Kimberley: Currently there is no word whether the game will include cranky schoolgirls dealing with the summer heat and vinyl bus seats (my legs still haven't recovered!) or the ominous waft of B.O. that trails its way though the bus.

John: SCS Software's series of truck simulators, 18 Wheels of Steel, suggests there is indeed a market for conscientious drivers as well as destructive ones. Bus Driver is due for release soon, and you can learn more at its website.

Darren: And still no sign of a PC release of Desert Bus. Sigh.
