Well he already bats like four people

With those bat skills, it's no wonder they keep losing
Just in time for the start of the Ashes series (a whitewash judging from day one), Codemasters has released details of the online gameplay in its upcoming Ricky Ponting International Cricket 2007. Known as Brian Lara International Cricket elsewhere in the world, the game will deliver "extensive online play", which Codemasters claims is a first for the cricket game genre.

The features differ depending on the platform, but on PC Ponting will have LAN and online play, with multiplayer leagues, big tournaments like the World Cup and Champions Trophy, as well as exhibition games. There are plans for 16-player tournaments, and a spectator mode in case you think watching the video game is more exciting than the real thing. Codemasters is even encouraging sledging on the Xbox 360 version through Live voice chat, but PC users might have to use TeamSpeak to harass their opponents.

Says John Jennings, Executive Producer of Ricky Ponting International Cricket 2007:
"We're proud that Ricky Ponting International Cricket 2007 is again raising the bar for cricket video games by being the first and only title in the genre to offer full online play on Xbox 360 and PC. It's something that the fans of the sport have been crying out for; we've listened and we're only too happy to be the first able to deliver.

- Codemasters

Decent online play has definitely been a shortcoming of cricket games to date, so let's hope Codemasters pulls it off in time for the World Cup in March next year, when the game is due for release.
