Massively multiplayer spreadsheets

Sports Interactive has announced its new sports management sim, Football Manager Live, a massively multiplayer evolution of the company's football sim franchise.

Up to 1000 managers can join each gameworld, creating their own teams, recruiting and trading players, and competing against each other in matches.

"With Football Manager Live, we're ripping up the script that says how online football management games should work" says Oliver Collyer. "We're creating something that is fun, challenging and sociable."

"Imagine a cross between Football Manager, fantasy sports and auctions sites and you are part of the way to understanding Football Manager Live" commented Miles Jacobson, Managing Director of Sports Interactive.

It won't be the first time sports games have made the move into the MMOG space, with Ultimate Baseball Online and golfer Shot Online offering some models. Unlike those games, which are free to play in their basic forms, it sounds like Football Manager Live will have a monthly fee ("the price of a few pints per month").

A beta test is due to start in May this year, with the game set for release in March 2008.
