Hi, I'm an Annoying Mac Ad

I'm watching a trailer for Die Hard 4.0 and I'm seeing a certain comic side-kick and thinking about some of his other work.

Stupid ads. Stupid Warren Cheswick (Justin Long) being all hip and unassuming and unthreating, and John Hodgman being brilliant as the scene-stealing dry as dust PC, who you can't help but like even as you wish him on your worst enemy.

If you're reading this blog on this website, you'll all know exactly why the ads are so ridiculous and so annoying. When Hodgman, in his brown suit, says, "Hi, I'm a PC," he should really be saying, "Hi, I'm a workstation and I'm exactly as freak'n dull as I've been designed to be."

If they wanted to stick it to PC they really should have had some some steroid-filled, crew-cut wearing guy commando roll onto into the set and yell something like, "Hi, I'm a games PC and I like to shoot stuff and blow shit up. Hoorah! Watch me run and jump ... what do you mean I'm looking a little warm? No I don't need a break, that beeping sound is like music to my ears. Okay, maybe I am a little hot, hey ... check out how hard I can crash ... yeeeeeaaaaaaah!"

Naturally my version of the Mac ad would be a bit different. Forget Hodgman, my PC would be more like Abbey (Pauley Perrette) from NCIS. She's got the style (how many people can combine science, hardware, and a little rock?) and, while she occasionally flips it and huddles, useless, in the corner, most of the time she'd up and wants to get into it (whatever it happens to be).

Here's my version of the Mac Ad:

Warren: Hi, I'm a Mac.

Abbey: Hi I'm a games PC. Hey, your jeans are adorable.

Warren: I like to listen to music, making webpages, and creating photo albums and I'm stylish in a certain slightly funky but unassuming way.

Abbey: My style is a little different ... I'm a little nerdy sometimes — I even like doing science, things like checking for aliens with the SETI program, or other folding programs. Check out my cute little lab coat. Suits me, doesn't it? But, I also like to have fun. Check out the bracelets and piggy tales.

I watch movies, listen to music in 7.1 sound ... oh, and hack NORAD, pilot submarines, explore nuclear reactors filled with mutants, and occasionally summon demons, or fight them depending on my mood. I'm not big on looking like anyone else ... see: cute tattoos.

Warren: Hey, they are cool. I'm totally unique too. I have like three different configurations and ... well ... come in white. If I'm feeling crazy I sometimes wear silver. And, if you want, you can totally change my desktop.

Abbey: Hey your style totally suits you. Me on the other hand, I like to change things up. Trying new things, getting grease under my nails, playing with new hardware, experimenting with whatever gear I can. Sometimes there are small explosions but most of the time it's just ... you know a blast. Then there are the LAN parties and endless games. You know what I'm saying?

Warren: Totally, I have World of Warcraft ...

Abbey: Hey, tell me about it! That game rocks. Recently I've been checking out Lord of the Rings Online, STALKER and Command and Conquer 3. Hey, how awesome does Crysis look?

Warren: I come with iTunes ... and talk to Japanese digital cameras.

Abbey: Hey did you download that freeware stuff as well? Cool...

So there's my PC personification. For the record: Yes I like Paulie, no NCIS isn't my favourite show, and I don't call my PC Abbey or snuggle up to it at night. I just think Abbey would make a great PC poster girl. What do you reckon?

Who embodies your little chunk of gaming bliss/blight?
