Ultima creator heading into space

Zero gravity Garriott
Veteran MMOG designer Richard Garriott is preparing to follow in his father's astronautical footsteps and take a commerical space flight to the Internatonal Space Station.

Organised by the privately owned Space Adventures Inc., Garriott's space flight will be dedicated to "science, engineering and educational projects", which will help to justify the sky-high cost. (According to the Space Adventures website, an ISS mission costs something like $30-40 million.)

"The reality that's brought me here intersects with the simulated, fantasy worlds I've created in my career as a computer game programmer," added Garriott.

"Without the success I've enjoyed as the creator of the Ultima series of games, I wouldn't have had the resources to be one of the first private space pioneers."

Garriott's adventure is scheduled for October 2008. If you want to follow his progress, you can head over to the dedicated website.
