OFLC not pleased with high impact violence

Rocket launchers are good for dismemberment
Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification has slapped Activision's upcoming Soldier of Fortune: Payback with a "refused classification", in effect banning the game from sale.

The Soldier of Fortune series is notoriously violent, but apparently Payback's content was a bit too much for the OFLC.

An OFLC spokeswoman said the OFLC board ruled that Soldier of Fortune: Pay Back's "playing impact... was a high impact which exceeded the MA15+ classification". Some specific examples included "close range shooting with substantial blood spray, blood splatters onto the ground and walls, [the ability to] target various limbs of the opponent which can result in dismemberment, and large amounts of blood sprayed which comes from the stump but victims sometime stay alive".

That sounds like a pretty good description of Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2, both of which were rated MA15+ by the OFLC. Activision hasn't announced whether it plans to modify the game for an Australian release.

Payback is due for release in some parts of the world on 21 November, and it'll be interesting to see how players feel about its violent content.
