In a bit of an idiot move over the weekend, a television reporter mocked Essendon's new eSports team is 'real nerds' - and it was not said with affection. It's caused bit of a backlash in gaming circles, but the truth is, traditional sports and eSports are just going to keep growing closer and closer, and it's up to neanderthal throwbacks to keep up with the changes going through both fields.
Sporting teams all over the world are partnering up with eSports teams, especially in the burgeoning Overwatch League. But PC hardware manufacturers are following suit, and the news that gaming brand HyperX is partnering with the Sydney Swans Australian Football team just proves the point.
During the coming 2018 season the Swans (go you good thing, etc, if you're supporter, boo hiss carn the Blues if you're a sad Carlton fan like me) will be seen wearing HyperX headsets while in the coach's box and on the bench. HyperX will also be working with the SCG's Esports High Performance Centre, which will now feature the full range of HyperX products and peripherals.
“We’re excited to be the first gaming accessories company to partner with an AFL team. Traditional sports like AFL have a long history and solid support from enthusiastic fans, and as esports is catching up quickly, we do see the trend of both sports converging and growing together.” said Susan Yang, Marketing Director, APAC Region, HyperX.
“We’re excited to partner with HyperX to integrate their products into our programs,” said. Sydney Swans Head of Strategy and Commercial Grant Rose. “This is one of the first major partnerships to sit across both traditional sport and esports, and it gives us the opportunity to work more closely with the Esports High Performance Centre across commercial and training practices."
So the sporting press may not get it, but at least the teams do.
